Zelenskyy’s government has completely failed the fight against the coronavirus pandemic
This is the result of loud and arrogant statements of Zelenskyy and his team, criminal refusal from producing the “Sputnik V” vaccine in Ukraine, plundering of the coronavirus fund and reluctance to create the necessary conditions for medical workers.
On the one hand, a disaster with healthcare is obvious with medical workers leaving jobs massively. Despite all the promises, they are not paid worthy wages, although doctors and nurses today on the front line, they are risking their lives and health.
According to the Sociological Service of the Center of Razumkov, since the first months of 2020, more than 66,000 doctors and health workers left Ukraine. During the pandemic period another 34,000 medical workers quitted.
On the other hand, we are witnessing the failure of vaccination. It is clear that the current catastrophic situation could be avoided if Ukrainians had an opportunity to get access to vaccines from COVID-19.
That is why we are witnessing the catastrophic situation today in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic. On April 6, Ukraine ranked 1st in Europe and 4th in the world in terms of mortality from coronavirus. In Ukraine, 430 coronavirus-infected people died. Italy with 421 dead ranked 2nd, and France - 3rd with 398 deaths recorded. As of the 7th of April, we had 481 coronavirus deaths, of the 8th – 464 ones, of the 9th – 419 deaths per day in Ukraine.
As of the 9th of April, Ukraine ranks 2nd in the world in terms of the coronavirus mortality rate. Only Mexico is ahead.
There are two main reasons for this sad anti-performance in Ukraine: the failure of vaccination and the unpreparedness of healthcare infrastructure, which is aggravated by the lack of medical staff.
As for vaccination, the maximum that the government did was purchasing vaccines of dubious quality, which is being massively refused from all over the world. And even in insignificant quantities. As we know, in February, the Ministry of Health brought 500,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine manufactured by India, and in March – only 215,000 doses of CoronaVac China-produced medicine. What do we have today? The official website says as of April 9, only 5 people received a full course of the coronavirus vaccine! Five people all over Ukraine!
Was it possible to prevent such a catastrophic situation? Yes, absolutely! To do so, the Ukrainian government should have thought strategically and ahead of the curve.
When in October 2020, negotiations were held with the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and an agreement was achieved that Ukraine could get the “Sputnik V” vaccine, the coronavirus mortality rate in our country was 105-130 people per day.
In November, arrangements were reached with the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin that the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the N. F. Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology transfers to Ukraine a license and raw materials in the form of a cell line for producing the “Sputnik V” vaccine at the Biolek enterprise in Kharkiv. Let me remind you at that time, the death rate from COVID-19 in Ukraine was 230-260 people per day.
The involved working group determined the deadlines necessary to establish production at the Ukrainian factory in Kharkiv – 5-6 months. As of May 2021, Ukraine could already produce 600-700 thousand doses of the “Sputnik V” vaccine every month.
Ukraine would be able to ensure the vaccination of doctors and of the most vulnerable segments of the population with a reliable and efficient medicine as soon as possible, and by the end of this year to achieve collective immunity. Instead, the vaccination epic in Ukraine has become the story of shame for the government and grief for the people paying for the former's mistakes.
