The government should heed the opinion of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and stop repressions against the opposition and freedom of speech

Presidential decree to impose sanctions against Taras Kozak, which led to the closure of three television channels (112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK), goes against international human rights standards. This decision is contrary to international human rights standards, as it lacks justification of its necessity and proportionality, and was not taken by an independent authority. Such a harsh assessment of the arbitrariness of the Ukrainian authorities was given by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the report of the UN Monitoring Mission in Ukraine for the period from February 1 to April 30 this year.

Ze-government tried to deceive the international community, hide the reprisals against the opposition and freedom of speech behind falsified accusations and loud slogans. These excuses did not convince anyone. In Ukraine and abroad, everyone clearly understands that there can be no justification for political repression and the closure of opposition media outlets without trial and investigation. The only reason is the fear of the authorities and unwillingness to answer to society for the failure of their anti-people policy.

OPPOSITION PLATFORM - FOR LIFE welcomes the conclusions of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine on the sanctions imposed on Taras Kozak and the closure of three TV channels. We consider the support of democracy and freedom of speech in Ukraine by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights extremely important.

Now the Ukrainian authorities have only one way out – to recognize the illegality and antidemocratic nature of their actions. Stop repression of the opposition. Cancel all unconstitutional decisions against our party members. Remove the blockade and ensure the smooth operation of three opposition TV channels.

It’s high time that the Ukrainian authorities stopped. Otherwise, they will have to answer not only for the violation of the Constitution and the destruction of Ukrainian democracy, but also for undermining the international reputation of Ukraine as one of the founding countries of the UN.
