The ins and outs of Ukrainian “democracy” in one vote: Ukraine in the UN again voted against the resolution on the fight against the glorification of Nazism
Ukraine’s voting in the UN of December 16 on the resolution “Combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance” once again demonstrated the absence of moral in the policy of official Kyiv. While the UN General Assembly with 130 votes in favor supported the document initiated by Russia, only the United States and, to the great shame of our nation, which survived all the horrors of the Great Patriotic War, Ukraine voted against.
Contrary to the opinion of its own citizens and the principles of a democratic society, acting contrary to the ethical and moral norms as generally accepted in the civilized world, Ukraine alone once again, obediently following the White House line, joined the United States and voted against the adoption of an important document aimed at preventing Nazism, racism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance.
The authorities, which have long and with irrepressible zeal served the interests of Washington, have shown complete dependence on the United States even in such a sensitive and fundamental issue for the Ukrainian society, inflicting another crushing blow on the image of our state. It is striking that this turned out to be acceptable for a country that suffered many-milliom human losses and was actually destroyed during the Nazi occupation, for a country whose heroes, to the last drop of blood, to their last breath, fought against fascism throughout the European continent.
Such a stance of Ukraine in the UN can cause nothing but feelings of deep shame and disgust. This once again confirms that rewriting history and imposing new heroes on Ukrainians from among the accomplices of Nazism and fascism have already been elevated to the rank of state ideology in Ukraine.
The spread of neo-Nazis and the atrocities of fascist groups, the complete permissiveness of national radicals, violence against all dissents, persecution of citizens on linguistic, ethnic, religious grounds and the practice of persecuting political opponents on fabricated criminal cases – these are the realities of modern Ukraine. And the authorities do not just turn a blind eye to all these crimes, they use them in their own interests and even initiate most of them, trying to intimidate society, eliminate political rivals and establish a dictatorship in the country.
My position is principled and consistent: the glorification of Nazism is not just unacceptable – it is a crime that does not and cannot be justified in the modern world. In this case, it is a crime at the state level, which causes huge reputational damage to Ukraine and may have serious consequences in the future. After all, playing up to ultranationalist sentiments by the authorities leads to serious confrontation in Ukrainian society. And attempts to curry favor with the United States and the fear of not fulfilling at least some of Washington’s instructions only strengthen Ukraine’s dependence, finally destroying its identity and sovereignty.
