OPPOSITION PLATFORM - FOR LIFE calls on the authorities to stop the destruction of local self-government in Donbas
The government is turning the Ukrainian Donbas into a territory without democracy. It consistently deprives Ukrainian citizens, residents of completely peaceful Ukrainian cities in the controlled territory of the right to local self-government. On May 26, Slavyansk of Donetsk region was added to the list of cities without representative power. A civil-military administration was introduced there by presidential decree.
There can be no justification for this illegal and anti-democratic decision. The mayor’s inability to govern the city is not a reason for the introduction of the CMA. Under this pretext, one can abolish self-government in any city, establish a military dictatorship in Donbas and throughout the country. Political conflicts should be resolved by citizens through elections, not by civil-military administrations!
Another act of attack on local self-government by Ze-team is all the more outrageous. Quite recently the Sixth Administrative Court of Appeal declared illegal the decision of the Central Election Comission to refuse to hold local elections in 18 united territorial communities (OTGs) in Donbas. This should have been a clear signal that the right of Ukrainian citizens to elections and representative democracy must be respected. But instead of recognizing the wrongness of their policy, the government has continued to follow the dictatorial path.
OPPOSITION PLATFORM - FOR LIFE demands that the massacre of local self-government is pit to an end. The introduction of civil-military administrations in peaceful cities contradicts the Constitution of Ukraine, the European Charter of Local Self-Government, all norms and principles of democracy. We demand that the authorities stop looking for pretexts to introduce a dictatorship and immediately start preparations for elections in 18 OTGs in Donbas, including re-election of a mayor of Slavyansk.
