The implementation of the Steinmeier formula into Ukrainian legislation is the only way to peace in Donbas
German Foreign Ministry called on Ukraine to fulfill its obligations agreed at the Normandy Four leaders summit in Paris on December 9, 2019, and implement the so-called Steinmeier formula into Ukrainian legislation, since until now the Ukrainian authorities have openly sabotaged this step, which is necessary for a peaceful settlement in eastern Ukraine.
The position proposed at that time by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was approved back in 2016 by the leaders of the Normandy format countries. This position is also supported by the international community, and is also confirmed by the UN Security Council resolution.
The Steinmeier Formula was also discussed during a meeting with members of the Bundestag, representatives of German diplomatic and business circles in Berlin on January 28, 2020 within the framework of the inter-parliamentary association “Inter-parliamentary Dialogue for Peace: Ukraine - Russia - Germany – France”, established upon the initiative of the “Opposition Platform – For Life". (Similar meetings were also held in Moscow and Paris.)
We believe that the implementation of legislative proposals aimed at implementing the “Steinmeier formula” into national legislation is the only way to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
“Opposition Platform – For Life” consistently defends the implementation of these proposals and on November 22, 2019 submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On a Special Procedure for Local Self-Government in Certain Districts of Donetsk and Luhansk Regiobs”, aimed at full implementation of the “Steinmeier formula” into the legislation of Ukraine.
“Opposition Platform – For Life” also elaborated a Plan-Concept for the Settlement of the Crisis in the South-East of Ukraine. The party has always made and will continue to make every effort to restore peace in our country.
It was the approval of the “Steinmeier formula” that once became a big step towards peace and a demonstration of the political will by official Kyiv for a peaceful settlement of the protracted conflict in Donbas. The Ukrainian authorities are obliged to adopt these changes in the legislation, and “Opposition Platform – For Life” will strive for this so that the Minsk agreements in general and the Steinmeier formula in particular are finally implemented – for the sake of peace in Ukraine, restoration of its unity and preservation of territorial integrity.
