Viktor Medvedchuk: Cargo transportation from Japan to Europe bypassing our country is another incompetent step of the Ukrainian government
The decision to carry out regular freight traffic on the Trans-Siberian Railway (Transsib) to Europe from January 2021 was made by the Japanese logistics giant – Hankyu Hanshin Express Global Corporation. Cargo terminals have already been booked in the ports of Japan and in Vladivostok, as well as in Poznan, Prague and Frankfurt.
After the Ukrainian government ineptly missed the opportunity to fully participate in the ambitious One Belt - One Road project to connect China and Europe, is it no wonder that the project connecting Japan, one of the largest economies in the world, with Europe, will also go to bypassing Ukraine. How can you trust the state, which is capable, in spite of its own economic benefit, to abandon Motor Sich – an enterprise that has recently occupied a leading position in the production of aircraft and helicopter motors not only in Ukraine, but also in the world?
As a result, there will be neither an enterprise, nor tens of thousands of highly skilled workers, nor income and taxes from the production of products that are unique based on world standards. Motor Sich is already on the verge of closure and bankruptcy. And there is a colossal fine of USD 3.5 billion ahead in favor of the Chinese owners of Motor Sich, who filed for Ukraine in international arbitration, because, having paid the money, they did not get control over the enterprise. There is no doubt that the Chinese side, with the support of the world’s best law firms, will win this dispute. For ‘black’ raiding, even at the state level, it is necessary to punish. However, the perpetrators will not be punished, the Ukrainian people will pay.
From the point of view of foreign investors, Ukraine is a toxic investment object. No nonsense about ‘investment guides’, no calls for investing in a country with ‘grandiose potential’ will fix the situation.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the transport route connecting Japan and Europe will bypass Ukraine: Toyama port on the Sea of Japan coast, Vladivostok port, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, Minsk and Brest to the cargo railway station Malashevichi (Poland). Its distance is 10397 km. The estimated delivery time for a standard container from the port of Toyama to the container terminal in Poznan is 22 days, which is half the time the sea route takes through the Suez Canal.
That is another grandiose failure of the government, destroying the country’s economy.
