Viktor Medvedchuk: Primitive attitude of Shmyhal towards the Sputnik V vaccine is harming the interests of Ukrainian citizens

While a number of states are already preparing to produce the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against the coronavirus, the Ukrainian government demonstrates primitive approach to this issue having opted for destructive stance that does not meet the interests of its citizens.  This was stated by the chair of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, MP Viktor Medvedchuk on the air of the Russia-24 TV channel.

“The question of purchase by Ukraine of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine is no longer on the agenda.  Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has been exactly two months late with his critical statements. Back in early October, during my meeting with Russian President Volodymyr Putin, the head of the Russian state gave the ‘go-ahead’ for the purchase by Ukraine of the Sputnik V vaccine,” Medvedchuk explained. “Today we are talking about the production of this vaccine in Ukraine.  For this, the Russian National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N. F. Gamaleya and the Russian Direct Investment Fund are ready to transfer production technology and raw materials to Ukraine in the form of a cell line.”

The politician emphasized that the statements that the Sputnik V vaccine has not yet passed the third stage of clinical trials are groundless, since the trials have not yet been completed by any of the developers of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“When the Prime Minister tries to sagely talk about the third stage of clinical trials, please remind him that vaccines such as of Pfizer and Moderna are at the same stage of trials,” Medvedchuk said.  “It will last for a year.  At the same time, the third stage of clinical trials determines not the safety, but the effectiveness of any vaccine, including of Sputnik V. Its safety was established at the first and second stages of testing.”

The politician also noted that China, India, Brazil, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Argentina and South Korea have already shown their interest towards the Sputnik V vaccine.  A number of states are ready to produce it domestically. 150 thousand Russians have already got vaccinated with Sputnik V.  Meanwhile, there is information in the media that people in Western Ukraine get unofficially vaccinated with this particular vaccine.  That is, Ukrainian citizens are interested in getting access to the means for protecting against COVID-19.

“It is difficult to call our Prime Minister’s position other than the primitive one in the context of the danger that threatens the citizens of Ukraine amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,” Viktor Medvedchuk stressed.

He added: “Me personally, members and followers of our party believe that the production of the Sputnik V vaccine in Ukraine will be established.”
