Yurii Boyko: Donbas and the whole country need a sustainable peace
The statement of Yurii BOYKO, Co-Chair of the “OPPOSITION PLATFORM – FOR LIFE” Political Party, delivered to the journalists on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada session on Thursday, November 5.
According to Yurii Boyko, today there is no single person in the country who would support the protraction of the conflict. Everyone would prefer searching for a political solution and demilitarization.
“Definitely, we stand for the demilitarization and political settlement of the conflict. However, the question arises: how to achieve this. When the government, in the person of the President, confirms its adherence to the Minsk agreements, takes on commitments for a peaceful settlement within the “Normandy Four” format a year ago in Paris, when the Steinmeier formula is agreed upon, and when afterwards none of these is implemented, it causes chaos. And when the Verkhovna Rada, by its decisions, cancels out all these arrangements, Ukraine gets the image of an unreliable partner,” he said.
The Ukrainian people voted for peace and expected this from the authorities. But a year and a half later we have not seen any effective progress in resolving the conflict in Donbas. The promised peace was never reached.
“Today it is quite obvious that the government is incapable of achieving peace, worse than that, it has ceased to strive for it,” Yurii Boyko stressed.
According to the politician, OPFL consistently advocates for peace, dialogue with Donetsk and Luhansk, for the implementation of the Minsk agreements by the Verkhovna Rada, for the adoption of a package of peace initiatives prepared by the opposition faction.
“We will initiate these processes in the parliament. It is essential that all the initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict should become a common position, get agreed with all the participants in the Normandy format, unrecognized republics. We consistently advocate for dialogue with Donetsk and Luhansk. We see that a compromise can be reached in this format. You can come to arrangements that suit everyone on both sides of the contact line. We can then agree on this in the Normandy format, provide international support for the implementation of these agreements and achieve peace,” Yurii Boyko said.
However, he stressed that today the authorities have set the goal of revising the Minsk agreements, playing geopolitical games instead of seeking a political settlement and entering into dialogue. “The government doesn't want dialogue, it walks away from peace. We continue to stand on different banks from the contact line. THE OPPOSITION PLATFORM – FOR LIFE is not satisfied with this state of affairs, it does not suit the Ukrainian people. Political forces must come to power, which will get back peace to Ukraine and unite the country, ” the OPFL Co-Chair concluded.
